My hp vista laptop doesnt detect my ethernet cable?

when i plug my Ethernet cable from my winXP to my hp vista it doesn't detect it ,it doesn't even connect to the internet. when i plug it,it says local area connection unplugged even though it is plugged and when i plug it on other laptops it works but when i plug it on my hp vista it doesn't work can anyone help me?

  1. Check this for me:

    Search: Device Manager (in your run command)

    Then, check to see if any items have yellow exclamation marks next to them indicating a missing driver. If that is the case, you will need to find/download that driver for the Ethernet Controller.

    You could also try checking the TCP/IP properties for your network connection (Right Click Local Area Connection > Click Properties > TCP/IP V4 Properties) and select both boxes to obtain automatically.

  2. If I understand correctly ,you are trying to connect 2 computers together via ethernet cable? If so you have to get a crossover cable and setup an advanced connection.If you mean you pull the cable from the XP computer and connect it to the Vista one,then make sure the network controller is enabled.Click on the "network icon" and check the settings.

  3. You need to install the drivers for it.  Do a google search on your computer model and find the drivers.  It may be on the laptop manufacterer's website.  I had the same problem when I rolled my laptop from vista back to XP.  Good luck
