It was some kind of seasoning. I just noticed I have ants, but I have small children and a puppy, so I don't want poisons.

  1. Not a clue... why don't you ask him?

The stuff I use hasn't failed me yet, its called cy-kick cs.  Seriously its the most effective product with one of the lowest toxicity levels you will ever find.

  2. Definitely not borax laundry soap. In big settings it's worthless, especially outside where moisture will crystallize it.

It could be many different things, but I'm guessing a regular pesticide.  Here's a list of what it could be:

    ficam

    bifenthrin

    cyfluthrin

    cypermethrin

Those are the most likely, though ficam may be illegal now.

Heck, he could have had an old bottle of chlordane (highly illegal and highly dangerous... but lasts a long time and kills bugs wonderfully... but can kill people too... and pets... and soaks into ground water, especially when applied by a novice). If chlordane is what was used... I'd avoid the place as much as possible.

  3. It was probably Borax laundry soap, it will keep little critters out of your house and it not harmful to domesticaed animals
