We know that it will be very different than what we are accustomed to, but long for the simpler life where we can 'live off the land' as much as is possoble these days. Negative attitudes need not reply.

  1. I never heard of a yurt in Hawaii.  The real estate cost must be hel! out there.  I'd be very surprised if it was possible to live any kind of natural existence out there.

Yurts usually go with living in Outer Mongolia I believe.

I guess I can understand why you'd rather go with Hawaii though.

Canada's nice, real nice.  Helps if you like snow though.

  2. The cheapest real estate is on the Big Island (which is much more agriculturally centered than the other islands) - near Kilauea volcano/ Hilo side. But then you have to deal with a constantly active volcano that has been erupting for at least the last 20 years. Also, all the best land has been taken up by coffee bean and macadamia nut plantations. However, there is a wonderful farmers market in Hilo.

  3. Hawaii is generally pretty crowded and land is at a premium.  Unless you have the wherewithal to buy a plantation, you will find it very difficult to "live off the land" because you can't get enough land to produce enough to live on.

Also, you need to consider building codes.  Hawaii is volcanic/seismic in nature, and also subject to hurricanes, so buildings must be to code.  Codes don't necessarily limit you to the conventional, but a yurt might not pass muster.

If you want to live a simpler life where you can produce enough on your land to live, you probably need to look somewhere other than Hawaii where more land is available.
