Question:

My husband JUST graduated from Navy Boot Camp. Some questions about "duty" on RTC after recruits graduate?

There are a few questions that I have. He is an airman apprentice now and is going to Florida for Flight school followed by SAR school... Then finally A School. He is on Ship 5, Div 301 and is either supposed to leave for Florida on the 20th or move to ship 17 on the 20th. (An out processing ship) He still hasn't received his orders... He is supposed to have "duty" until he leaves for Florida. Can anyone tell me about "duty" for Seaman that have already graduated but are staying on RTC waiting to leave for school? Stuff like what time do they have duty? When can they have phone calls/use the internet? What time do they have to go to bed/wake up? What will "duty" include? Can they leave the base when they aren't on duty? He said the SECOND he could call, he would. But it is already Tuesday morning and I dropped him back off and said goodbye Sunday night... If he is already graduated, I would think he could call whenever! The reason I am asking all of this is because he didn't know himself so he couldn't give me any answers before I left to come back here. I'm kind of wondering when I'm going to hear from him! I need to know his orders as soon as he gets them so I can hurry and move my wifey butt down to Florida to be with him!!! Thank you so much!

  1. while in Holding/TPU he will be doing scut work around the base.. emptying garbage cans, sweeping, shoveling snow. It's just like boot camp, but with no RDCs.

while in holding he won't necessarily get to use his cell phone or even use the internet with any regularity.  and he if he is due to report to Pensacola this week he will not have TIME to call until he gets settled down there.

and make sure he will have permission to bring you down there.  Aircrew./SAR and A school are THREE different schools and if they are each under 6 months long he CANNOT bring you down there, even if all three added together equals six months or more.

meaning he may not be allowed to live with you off base and they will not pay to move you down there.  and you will NOT qualify to live in base housing.

  2. In this case it probably means that he will be assigned out for various details and tasks that come up.  This could be anything from mowing laws, to filing papers to pulling nighttime phone watch (military units always leave one person awake and on duty at all times in case of emergency).
