  1. Using public transport the cheapest way but not necessarily the  quickest or most convenient of getting to Lancaster Gate from Heathrow is to take one of two routes on the Underground

    1.  Take the Piccadilly Line to Holborn then change to the Central Line to get to Lancaster Gate

    2.  Take the Piccadilly Line to Earl's Court, change to the District Line then get out at Notting Hill, get on the Central Line to Lancaster Gate

The most expensive but quickest method take the Heathrow Express to Paddington - you can apparently walk to Lancaster Gate from Paddington, according to Transport to London website it should take about 15 minutes or you could get a taxi or just pick up the District Line at Paddington, change at Notting Hill to the Central Line.

This is the Transport for London Website, it has a journey planner & tube maps which you may find useful:

This site explains how the Oyster card works quite well & has the fares well laid out:

This is the link to the Heathrow Express, which will have the costs involved - the Underground is the cheapest option:

Edit: There are also coach services provided by National Express & Airbus Heathrow Shuttle, neither of which I know much about:

  2. As you reach the airport pick up free maps of Underground which you will find on various stands across the airport. The map will give you a good idea about all the train routes and follow the route best to reach the station you wish to reach. Also check with your hotel/acco if the station you have chosen is closest to the hotel as sometimes the next station can be closer to the hotel.

Its not hard at all. Just take care to get down at the right station and changing the trains is very easy as everything is marked quite well in each station.

A tip : have a train pass made for the number of days you wish to stay in London. This will give you unlimited number of train trips for all those days of stay.
