What would you recommend? We are 18 and 19. I have severe anemia and have to get medications that are quite expensive and we need some help. Also we want something that covers pregnancy for when we start our family in a few years.

  1. I don't know enough about buying personal medical insurance, but have heard Blue Cross Blue Shield rates very well.  Consumer Reports Magazine rates these companies often.

Can you or your husband get medical insurance through an employer?  Otherwise private insurance costs are through the roof.  I know a family who has Family Coverage through Blue Cross and it costs them $2,300 a month.  However, I am not privy to the specific coverages, but they never have problems getting the care that they need.  When I had my kids, our medical coverage through my husband's work paid 100% of the hospital bill ($26,000), all I had to pay were $20 co-pay office visit fees.

Starting out can be tough.  Depending on your income, you may be eligible to receive medicaid through the state (nothing to be embarrassed about), and that could help supplement the cost of your meds and OB/GYN care when the time comes.  Just a thought.

  2. Look towards your state's high risk pool for you.  Your spouse sounds like no problem.

  3. You're going to need to get coverage on a group plan, through an employer.  That severe anemia, and those medications - you're not going to find a company willing to swap $400 a month in premiums, for $1,000 a month guaranteed, in meds.
