  1. It depends on where you plan to go.  I went to Costa Rica and rode horses and then went back for R&R.  I can highly recommend my R&R trip.  I spent time in the beach area.  I have heard the Caribbean side is not so nice.  If you want the beach area, stay on the Pacific side.

My trip was a beach oriented trip on the Pacific side.  You need to watch out for the rainy season which I believe is Sept. - Nov.

I stayed at a place called Hotel Luna Azul.  It is nested on a hill across the road from a beautiful very private beach.  You must get a rental car.  You can drive to two absolutely fabulous beaches.  There is so much to do around this area.  The hotel is owned by two wonderful swiss men.  It is fabulous, priced incredible, includes two gourmet meals, private bungalows, outdoor private showers overlooking the rainforest, huge rooms with private balconies.  Small, and beautiful.  You can take your car to all the places you need to go and have great days of getaways.   We got to see the turtles laying their eggs, so dependent on the time of year you go, that is an amazing experience and one not to be missed.  Ralph at Luna Azul can tell you all the great things to do.  The monkeys are a riot.

You can also take off and do lots of other areas of Costa Rica.  Be prepared to fall in love with this country.

The roads in the Guanacaste region are undeveloped.  They are dirt, with highways that are developed.  Signs are limited so you need to be very careful when you drive.  Only during the day.  It is fun and an adventure.
