Question:

My husband and I have not received our government stipend check? Is there a way to track it or find it?

My husband and I moved from Texas to California after taxes had been filed. So, our tax address isn't our current address. We had our mail forwarded but not all of it is making the connection, and the family members who are angry that we moved are keeping our mail. We haven't gotten our gov. stipend check or anything in the mail about it. Is there a way to track it or find out if we should have received it. Is there a way to change the address on where it comes? It's a large sum of money, so I want to make sure we get it. Any info would be greatly appresiated. Thank you for taking the time to answer.

  1. I moved in April, filed a change of address with the post office. Did not file anything with IRS. My son's rebate arrived at the new address. The IRS had our new address printed on the check so they must update their files in connection with the postal service updates.

As to your family not forwarding your mail:

Contact your OLD postmaster (in the town you moved from)and let him know what is happening. If your postmaster filed your change of address even if it is only 1 family member moving out of the family home they still HAVE TO forward your mail. The mail should not even be arriving at your old address for anyone to not forward. If the postmaster is not doing his job then you can file a complaint with your local police dept. I learned this during my recent move when my new mail carrier refused to deliver my mail because I moved in with family and the mail carrier wanted me to put up my own mailbox so she refused to deliver my mail. I get my mail now, in my sister's mail box!

Sorry I forgot to answer your question. You can go to the IRS website and find "where's my rebate", type in your info and find out if your rebate has been mailed but if it has been mailed it will tell you to wait until a certain date before you contact IRS to inquire about it. At least then you will know for sure that you are going to get one and for how much.

  2. the i.r.s does not forward checks period. you need to call them asap and tell them whats going on.

  3. The "angry" family members should be told it is highly illegal to withhold your mail.  Uncomfortable or not,  yu have got to communicate that to them.  Tell them you will inform IRS that they are withholding communications with you.  You don't have to whine about needing the check -- just firmly let them know what they are doing is in violation of fed law and you will take action immediately.  What have you got to lose?  Also, I have no idea what a "stipend" is but if it is a welfare check, your family members are in real trouble.  If this check is your 2008 tax refund, pretty much the same story but not as bad for them because this is a one time deal.  Going through IRS for a replacement check will take forever.  ALWAYS have IRS deposit money directly into your checking account.  Good luck.

  4. Are you referring to the economic stimulus payment? If so, you should call the IRS at 1-800-829-0582, extension 726 and see if they have your current address. If the check was sent to the old address, it probably wouldn't have been delivered if the post office is aware that you moved. It would then be returned to the IRS, which will reissue it to the new address.
