Question:

My husband and I just bought our first house...?

...We're afraid we're gonna have a lot of nosy friends and relatives asking how much we bought the house for, what our monthly payments are, etc......

Where do we draw the line without being rude? I mean, I don't mind spilling SOME of the details.........but not all the way down to the penny! Am I wrong?

Any similar situations? Any advice will be great! Thanks!

  1. How exciting!!! Congrats!!

hopefully you should be able to get away with being cutcey and just saying "too much" :)

If that doesn't work play dumb and be like OH What was that again...hmm

If they still won't drop it be honest and say I really don't want to tell EVERYONE :)

  2. The cost is no real secret, it is usually published in a local real estate section of the newspaper and is public record.  Payments are you business.  Discuss it with your husband and come up with your joint answer.  Good luck.

  3. That info is no big deal. They can find that out anytime. Being rude to your friends and relatives by playing secret agents about your home isn't going to get you any favors. Get real. Maturity is being able to share your new home with them and pride.

  4. you are not wrong, tell them that you paid "enough" for it but you are hoping it will be "worth it in the end" and NO, they can't come over unless you ask. LOL.

  5. It's none of their business, don't share the info.  Maybe ask why they want your personal info.  Or you could just look at them and ask if they had s*x last night.  Then burst out laughing like you made a joke.

Better yet tell them so and so asked the same question just a few hours ago.  Tell then you replied by asking about their s*x life.  It should change the subject.

  6. Sure.... when they ask things you are unwilling to answer, reply

"Why would you need to know that?"""    And smile

  7. There is a website where you can find the prices of all the houses in the US (aerial photo of your house, the year the house was built, # of owners, # of bedrooms, current price, etc etc).  Anyone can look it up if they really wanted to know.

  8. when they ask how much just say oh we got it for a great deal. and when they say what are your monthly notes say its within our budget. i dont think that is being rude people need to understand you just dont ask certain question. that come from no home training

  9. I've heard it said that the best answer to a question you don't want to

answer is to look them straight in they eye and ask, "Why do you

want to know?"  That usually works.

  10. How's this for an answer suggestion:

"It worked out well.  The payments are right in the range we were looking for".  If they insist, just say that you're really not comfortable discussing those matters.  If they continue, ask them a personal question - such as "How big and/or hairy are your genetalia?"

    They'll get the point.

  11. Actually it is none of their business. It's public knowledge what you paid for the house, but other than that you own them no response. I can't believe people would ask you what the payments were and etc.

  12. Wow, if you know for sure that you're going to encounter those types of questions from friends or relatives then clearly you haven't defined any boundaries with these people & that falls on YOU, not them.  People treat you the way you allow them to treat you.  If you've been extremely open about details of things in the past to them, then you can't blame them for being nosey now.  In the future, my advice to you is to put up clear boundaries with people and do not discuss details with people.  When you discuss details, they start to feel like it's ok to ask very personal questions.

If someone asks the price of your house just say "oh, it was a typical price for this neighborhood." and if they keep pressuring you, then that's when you put up your boundaries by saying "that's private & not something we discuss with people."  That'll shut 'em up!
