My husband and I would like to go snorkelling in the ocean here in NC. Anyone with snorkelling experience?

We just mainly want to go snorkeling off the beach. I collect shells, and want to see what we can get off the coast as opposed to just lying on the beach iteslf. However, I am a little scared to go out so far (just a few hundred yards at most). Plus, I have never snorkelled before, though I am a good swimmer.Can anyone with snorkelling experience PLEASE share some tips?

I have snorkeled many times...including in Hawaii and the Bahamas.  Just gorgeous!!  My only tip would be to maybe practive in a pool.  It can be hard getting used to breathing that way.  And you'd rather accidently swallow some pool water rather than salt water.  

Make sure you have great gear.  I've had snorkels that would fall back when I was out swimming and I'd end up sucking in water.
