  1. Unfortunately using an embroidery machine is something you really need classes for. It can be very frustrating without them. They are many tricks and tips needed to get a good design sewn out.  Check out sewing machine stores around you for any kind of embroidery class.

I also took several classes on thread, stabilizers, hooping and embroidery at sewing conventions.

You must use embroidery thread (sulky is good) and bobbin thread (it is thinner) in the bobbin. Use an embroidery needle.

In all honesty I would take it back to Wal-Mart and buy a good used embroidery machine from a dealer who will give you lessons. Any machine bought at the dealer comes with free lessons on how to use the machine and embroidery unit.

  2. The disney embroidery machine should be the brother model am I correct?

Embroidery can ba as simple as you want to make it to as difficult as you want to. But the basic principle for your machine is it has over approx 200 preset designs. You pick the design you want to sew (can be 1 color or many colors) then you take your hoop the 4x4 hoop that came with your machine and you put your fabric into it. Make sure it is tight and you will need a backing to support the stitches on the back side of the fabric. When you put your hoop into the machine you can move the design around to get its placement where you want it, and hit sew. It will sew through the first color and then stop and tell you to change threads. and continues til the end of the design. I have list a few sites that have some online projects to show the various steps. You may also email me and we can talk more if needed.

  3. There are a lot of Yahoo groups that discuss machine embroidery.  This is a great way to learn a lot from other people that are fairly new as well as people that have been doing it for quite a while.  You might even meet someone on one of the groups that lives near you that might be willing to help in person.

I agree that a local dealer or fabric shop is a great place for hands on lessons, but you don't always have to purchase your machine from them, you would just have to pay for the classes.

Do a google search for machine embroidery and you can find video tutorials that you can download...some free to get you familiar with the hobby and others that you pay for.

Good luck and have fun learning!!!

  4. See if your local sewing store has a sewing club.  They will often have lots of ways to use all the embroidery features and what to make with them.  Enjoy your machine!

  5. No offense drip....but, that is bad advice. I have 2 of these machines. I have 4, and the disney machines are easiest. I suggest that you just jump in and have fun learning. It won't take long, and you will become addicted! The designs out there make it so much fun. Keep your fabric tight in the hoop. Don't walk away from the machine (thats when things "happen"!) And what I think is good advice, is practice with denim. You can get large practice pieces off an old pair of jeans.

    Just remember...have fun!

  6. Being new, there should be a manual with it.  I strongly urge you to read it.  Yes, it would be a lot better to get instruction from a human.  However, some of us don't have that luxury available to us.

My mother sent me my Brother 150 in the mail, 6 years ago.  It took me a year of searching before I found affordable designs.  Up to that point, I just played with the few designs that it came with, to get aquainted with the machine.

I almost gave the machine away, just as mom had done.  Then, I discovered all the machine embroidery yahoo groups that there are.  There are many knowledgeable  folks in these groups who can answer your questions on all the machines.  I am not familiar with the limitations of the Disney machines.  Mine is just a little Brother 150.  I taught myself how to use it along with the manuals and asking a lot of questions to the ladies (and gents) in the yahoo groups I belong to.

I have found a nice little group that chat on one of the sites.  The  Designs by SICK yahoo group has many free designs to learn with, a lot of staff, a chat room, and a good site to maneuver around in.  Don't let the name throw you.  They really are nice people.

I wish you well.   And, don't give up.  It is really a fun way to be creative.
