I discovered that my cheating spouse's single social security number contains two names, one is his and the other I have never heard of. What should I do? Is this safe? Also, we recently filed taxes separately but he filed an amendment. Does that mean I get nothing from the IRS?

  1. It's not possible for there to be more than one name associated with a SSN on the SSA or IRS systems.  That's not to say that someone isn't fraudulently using his SSN with the wrong name but that would trigger a mismatch letter from SSA.

As long as you file separate returns, what he files will have no affect on you for those tax years that you filed separately.

  2. Boston is correct.

And if you get anything back from your seperate return it depends on if you were due a refund. His amending his return might or might not effect your return. If you filed a legal return you have nothing to worry about.

    Hope this helps.
