  1. Hi. I havn't personally, but will be starting the process sometime soon (I live in Georgia too). My neighbor did it a few years ago, and because she had lost contact with the birth father and didn't know how to find him, she got an attorney and they put an ad in the paper for 30 days I think, and he never turned up, so they ended up terminating his rights. Then they went to court, and her her son was adopted.

  2. I personally have not, but know someone who has. (I live in GA) The only thing I know is that it was very expensive, and took the mom a long time for the natural father to sign over his rights to the child. He finally did it, and now after 2 years, her daughter was adopted by her current husband.

  3. I'm in Texas but I'm sure it's much the same. First I sent a letter to my ex, telling him there was pending legal action against him, I enclosed the termination of parental rights paperwork for him to sign. Basically I told him that he could sign willingly and not have to go to court or he could fight me in front of a judge. He signed and mailed it back to me the following day without a fight.

After I had that and no fight from him we had to petition the court and pay filing fees with minimal paperwork, once we did that then I downloaded the forms and inserted the relevant information into them.

The judge ordered the home study which was really simple, it cost about $250. Again, I downloaded some simple questionaire stuff so we'd know in advance what they'd need.

Once that was all done and I completed the final papers we had a simple court hearing, my ex had waived all court appearance, the judge said it was granted and that was it.

We had to file papers with the BVS for a new birth certificate for the legal name change and list my husband as father. It cost $75 for that and one certified birth certificate, additional ones were like $30.

Once we had the birth certificate then we had to change his name with social security. That part is free.

Total cost because it was uncontested and we were able to do it ourselves it was about $600 or so.

    Court costs $225

    Home study $300

    New birth certificate $75

    Sharing the same last name...priceless

  4. please get extra copies of her original birth certificate.  once your husband adopts her, it will be illegal for her to get one.
