My husband has dual citizenship in Hungary and I was wondering if my son can get a citizenship there also, due to being 50% Hungarian. I have heard that they might have done away with this possibility, but am not certain. Thanks. Oh and if youre wondering why I'd want him to have dual citizenship, its because most of my in laws live there and due to the way our country is being run he would do better there, I'd think.

  1. I'm thinking about moving back to Europe too...or Canada...call the consulate and speak to a higher authority person not some paper pusher...

  2. Most likely your son can have dual citizenship also because he is Hungarian by blood and American by soil, in the same way your husband is. I think it is great to have dual citizenship because he can choose were he want to live, work, etc. when he get older. You need to call the Hungarian embassy or consulate and register your son as a Hungarian born in US (is like getting a new birth certificate) and with that he will get all his documents, passport, etc. He will never loose either one, he can be a dual citizen for ever. It is very convenient especially if his family lives there. He is a Hungarian-American he deserve to have both nationalities, cultural backgrounds from both of you, and contact with his relatives. Good luck..call the consulate..

  3. igen, the child of a Hungarian citizen is a citizen.

    Why?

Because of the brain-drain the country has been suffering for the last century to the west. Birth rates are very low, and families are payed to have more children. Also, foreign-living Hungarians are generally very patriotic.

Be careful about mandatory military service though... find out the rules. The upside is EU memebership.

  4. You know as much as love Hungarians, and think that have dual citizenship is a good and worthwhile thing, I think that you are full of wrong thinking about your own country!

Go try Hungary. Life is still more limited in prospects there after Communism.  It would be a good experience for you if nothing else.

  5. You better ask directly the hungarian government to better clear your understanding in the case of your son.
