My hubby has wanted to go into the highway patrol for years not. Unfortunately, in Ohio, there has been some stuff going on wherein the academy that is held every year has been pushed back for the last 2 years and is suppose to start this coming April (if it isn't pushed back again). My hubby has been accepted and gone through the background stuff and now we're just waiting for the academy. I'm just looking for some experience and words of wisdom from those who have a spouse in that field or those who've been in it and what its really like and the work stress thats put on a family. He's also in the national guard and that will take up a lot of his time too...and I just feel but choosing this as a life career, as rewarding and proud as it is, its not the job for family life. How does it affect kids, a marriage, home life? (we have no kids by the way) Thanks for the help!

  1. Regardless of the area, the toughest careers for marriages are the military and police work.

The key to a successful relationship and career is merely perspective. It is important for him to remember that home life comes first. It is also imperative that you remember that his job(s) can be h**l.

Help each other out even when you are exhausted and the days tend to run together. Both are extremely rewarding but require substantial resolve and ethic.

  2. You are right, it's a tough job on the family, spouse and kids, however he will need all the support you can give him.  When I went through the academy it was tough as h**l, but I really depended on the support from my GF.  Now that I'm on the job, things are better.  I have a crazy schedule, but I have off every other weekend which makes it easy to do things together.  My advice is not to give up on him, or give him a hard time.  He may not show it, but it's going to stress him out and the last thing he would want is the additional stress at home.  Hang in there, it will be ok.

  3. my experience with the California highway patrol is they are very rude!
