He's in the army guard. He's been deployed once and now he wants to go active. Any advice on what to expect or what to look out for?

  1. If he's been deployed once, than he already knows.

  2. go for it you only live once, and what better job is there then being a soldier?

  3. Just personal experience-my husband did this and it's the best thing that ever happened to our family. If he's talking about going AGR with the guard, you can really get no better experience as far as benefits. I would definitely pursue AGR or Title 32 before going Title 10.

He got back in the Guard after 9/11 as an E-5. He was promoted to E-6 while deployed. When he came back, he went AGR and got promoted to E-7 (working as a recruiter). They were paying for his college (that's all free, baby) so he got enough credits to go through OCS. Now he's a 2nd LT. The pay is pretty good, the benefits are exceptional. Now I'm gearing up for our first PCS move and looking forward to retirement. We have three kids, so Tricare is GREAT for us.

  4. Honestly, you have to be prepared to be alone, and if you have kids...you may find yourself fitting in better with single moms.  I love the Army, they take care of my family.  I love my husband, he's an amazing man and a loyal soldier.  Having said that, we've been married 6 years and only home 28 months.  I wouldn't trade our life, but it can be trying for both of us at times.

The benefits are good, the Army community can be a great extended family away from home, and knowing he has a job he can't lose is a piece of mind.  Not to mention, he is doing something he believes in.

    Good luck =)
