you must be a British citizen to get a British passport

you only have an indefinite stay so you have to have a passport from India

You need to take a oath of naturalization and actually apply for British citizenship before you become a British citizen.

Because you're not married to a UK citizen (if your partner was British) you need to live legally in the UK for 5 years instead of 3.

To get a UK passport you must become a UK citizen. Firstly you don't need to become a UK Citizen or get a UK passport, once you have indefinite leave to stay then you can do anything that a UK citizen can apart from:

* Vote

* Stand for Parliament

* Call on the services of the British Embassy when in another country.

* Take the "quick" queue when coming into a UK or other European airport.

My wife is a US citizen living in the UK and she has not applied for UK citizenship. If you want to become a UK citizen then you can do so after you have been resident in the UK for three years. You will also have to take a "life in the UK" test and swear an oath of allegiance.

This oath is to the queen - the reason my wife will NOT apply for a British passport, she believes that all people are born equal.

Remember that there is no pressure to do this once you have permanent residence. Welcome to the UK, I hope you and your husband are very happy here.

You got indefinite stay permission in U.K. not British Citizenship that you will be able to apply & get British Passport. For obtaining British Passport apply for British Citizenship first.
