  1. Bank and credit card statements will show history of premiums payment to insurance companies. If your husband pays the premium through cash, look for receipts.

I am sorry for your loss.

  2. Look through bank statements, credit card bills, check book records first.  He had to have paid premiums at some point if he had a policy.

If he was working at the time you might check with his employer to see if they had any kind of life insurance as part of his employee benefits.

As a last resort, MIB offers a lost policy service.  They won't actually be able to find the policy, but for $75 they will tell you if he had applied for life insurance and with what company in the last 12 years.

If you are the beneficiary then at some point down the road the life insurance company will discover that he is dead through a social security scan and try to contact you and send you a claim form.  That may take years.

  3. Check bank statements - see if there are regular monthly outgoings, if yes, contact the bank.  You'll obviously require proof (the Death Certificate) and need to visit in person.

In the UK if you own a home, life insurance is compulsory and the majority of people (for ease) take out a policy with the same bank that provided the mortgage.

  4. No - only through his personal records.
