  1. Wayne C is correct, except that we don't have MOS testing in the Army anymore.

88 - Transportation Career Management field

    88N - Transportation Management

    88N1 - A skill level 1 (E-1 through E-4) Transportation Management Specialist.  Skill level 2 = E-5, SL 3 = E-6, SL 4 = E=7, etc.

88N1O - (yes that is an O, not a 0) the O stands for Open - means that he has not been trained in any subspecialty.  This 5th position is called the SQI - Skill Qualification Identifier

    Other options would be:

    88N1P - Parachutist

    88N1L - Linguist

    88N14 - Recruiter

    It actually gets more complicated

    He could be a 88N1PB4AD

The 6th and 7th positions are one item, called an Additional Skill Identifier (ASI), in this case B4 which means sniper.

The 8th and 9th positions are also one item, equating to language proficiency, in this case AD, which means Modern Standard Arabic.

(note: these were just intended as an example - I really doubt that there is a a Transportation Manager in the Army who is Airborne and Sniper Qualified and speaks Arabic.)

  2. The link will tell you what an 88N is (Transportation Management). The 10 is the lowest skill level. That number goes up with rank and MOS test scores.
