  1. Following training, he'll be assigned somewhere. There are a lot of possibilities, but obviously a lot of them are near borders. For the first years, he's not likely to get a lot of choice, so it could be anywhere from someplace very hot and very dry (and very Hispanic) to someplace with vicious winters. It's clearly not just a day job. Nights, weekends, and holidays not only have to be covered, but in some assignments, night work is usual. And you can't get upset then he doesn't get off at the scheduled time. So, you have to be pretty independent and flexible. He can't run home to fix something, and he can't always take off when you want or need something. The work can be sometimes boring and sometimes very stressful. The two of you will have to learn to communicate openly. I don't want to play up the danger factor too much, because overall Border Patrol officers are more at risk than a lot of other officers, but some of the areas where Border Patrol is heavily active are indeed dangerous and appear to be getting more dangerous as the Mexican cartels become more active on the U.S. side. Very new intelligence indicates they now openly authorize their enforcers to operate on this side. Before he joins, you should settle the issue of whether you are solid enough to deal with it. Some posts are in poverty counties with poor schools, poor public services, corruption, etc. Some are in rather nice places. But you can't pick.

  2. Honestly, depending on how strong your husband is, you'll probably have to comfort him alot due to how much red tape and public misunderstandings there are about what happens on the Border Patrol.  Sometimes its all fine and dandy. most times its hard, unappreciative work with no fame, no glory. Alot of catching the same guy you saw last week doing the same thing. finding that you cant do anything except turn him around. put him in a cell and wait to find him the desert again.

They are making improvements.  you now have to check the wall to see if there are hidden doors. the security cameras dont work 100%. the longer it stays in the spot light the more funding it actually gets from that bill that passed like 4yrs ago.

  3. Border Patrol is its own branch?

  4. A good salary, good benefits, work at night ( this is when they slip across the borders) 2 days a week off, retirement in 20 years of service.

  5. The Federal Training is 6 months away form home and the job is rotating shift and long hard hours.
