I have seen female boy scout leaders. We don't have kids, but we have a few neices & nephews.

  1. It is a great idea! It shows that they value Girl Scouts too. We have a couple of great guys leading troops. They typically bring another skill set to the troop, like how to use tools and build stuff.

Note: It is a rule (in our handbook, Safety Wise) that there needs to be a non-related adult female in the leadership team.

Also, for both males and females: No adult is supposed to be alone with any Girl Scout(s). There should be two non-related (and not in the same household) adults present at all times.

  2. I think it's a fine idea, and there are plenty of male GS Leaders.  Especially for girls without a strong father figure, but really for any girl, interaction with a positive adult male role model is wonderful.  One of the trainers in our Council is a male leader, and he's hysterical - I can just imagine how much fun the girls in his troop have.

As has been said, he would need an unrelated adult female to be the other leader and to be present at all times.  There are rules about adult men at overnight events (they must have separate sleeping quarters and bathrooms) - and some local GS Councils make stronger rules than the national ones.

That said, be prepared for some resistance from some parents and other leaders.  It's not nice, and it's not an official standpoint, but some adults will have a problem with it.  Despite all the background checks, training, and protections put in place for all adults, for some other adults, it will be an issue.  He'll need a thick skin to deal with it sometimes, sad as that is to say.

    Good luck to him!

(Hrrm, editing this because I noticed your user name and searched for some of your other questions... so I'm guessing yours isn't a legitimate question, but I'm leaving my answer up since someone else who legitimately is interested in being a male GS leader may search for the response eventually.  And just FYI, even if your Q&A are "private" in your profile, a Google search still reveals them.)
