  1. If he is attempting to apply as a conductor, brakeman, or a track/maintenance worker he doesn't need any kind of college education, and this applies to all railroads, both large and small (he eventually can move up to an engineer if he can get on as a conductor or brakeman).  Being that Pan Am is a larger railroad the pay should be good and it will very likely also include great benefits and retirement.

The downside will be that he will probably have to put in long hours although, since Pan Am is not a really large railroad either (like CSX, Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, etc.), hopefully he will at least be confined to working a district that allows him to be home at the end of every day.  In any event, the best of luck to

  2. Working for the railroad can be a fun and exciting job, but also one that requires a major life change. To go to work for the railroad, most railroads don't require special schooling. They will teach you. Some, however require training at a specialty school such as Mondoc RR Academy. The best thing to do is to call Guilford and see what they require. I would recommend that your husband seriously consider the life change that will take place if he becomes a railroader. I'm an engineer and it's a difficult road with irregular hours and long work days. My job also takes me away from home over night a couple of times a week. I also am on call 24 hours per day, so I can't have alcohol or travel more than 1 hour from home as I may have to report at any time. I've been dragged from dinner and special events many times, and for my first 2 years, didn't see a holiday at all. If you'd like more information, please feel free to contact me via e-mail.
