Okay so the labor law states that mileage is 44.5 cents a mile but where does the mileage start and where does it stop...We live in VA and I cannot find anything online to help him out.

  1. Look for information on the IRS website.

    www.irs.gov

I know personal mileage deduction is 50-1/2 cents per mile for 2008.

I also know there are some conditions that need to be satisfied before you are able to make the deduction.  As others have noted, keep a detailed log of every mile and expense related to work.

    Good Luck

  2. This depends on a million different things. But a little idea in my area is: miles from house to actually business address (say 50 miles) deducted from total miles driven. Monday he drove 500 miles then you would deduct the 100 miles he would have had to drive from the office to the house both ways. Now this differs in may places, jobs and circumstances. So I would contact a local attorney who handles job related business in your area. If he signed something in his job requirements you might want to consult that as well. Some business aren't required to reimburse for mileage, so consult a professional about it. Hope that helps.

  3. The mileage starts when he get in the truck and ends when he gets to his destination.  When he finishes there, the mileage starts again and so on.

Keep a mileage log in the truck and write down the beginning mileage and ending mileage for each job and the customers name.  Traveling to the job when you work out of your vehicle is deductible.

Be sure that he also records the mileage when he has to make a trip to a supplier or other related work details that might not neccessarily be for a specific customer.

Good Luck and be detailed.  If you are ever audited, as soon as they see the dated, detailed info, they will not question anything.  Jackie b
