  2. Fertiliser is going to be off the board this year with all the extra corn going into the ground.  Farmers are going to be chasing that 4 dollar corn and the guys that sell them inputs are going to take their share.  I recommend that your uncle take advantage of the stampede, and find someone to pay him an exhorbant sum to lease out his land, let them take on the extra cost of the inputs and take the risk that some of these ethanol projects that are stalled right now will come on stream.  That way if the weather, market or anything else craps out he still gets paid.

  3. The first responder had good answers.

If your uncle has been farming for many years,

he probably knows alot about alot of things,

and he has seen it all.

    He likely does crop rotations.

e.g. legume and cereal grain crop

The soil testing overlayed onto a GPS map will tell about how good the land is and its potential.

He needs to know for himself.

You or other family members can succeed him?

He might consider leasing the land out .

So, they will want to know.

He likely has thought of all this.

Thank you for being a caring and concerned nephew :)

  4. The first thing you should do is get a soil test.  This will show you what nutrients you need to get everything balanced in your soil. Also it will give you the pH of the soil and you will know if you need to apply limestone to correct it.  Having said that let me say that there is nothing you can do to guarantee it will be a good year farming. His good years and bad years were likely because of weather conditions and not anything he did to cause them. That is the nature of farming.  Do everything right that you can as far as farming practices, and pray for the proper rainfall, temperature, no killing frost, etc.  Good Luck, I hope that your uncle has the best year yet.
