My internet wont work! Please help!

so i start my online masters program sept 2 and i really need my internet to work. I have a Dell laptop and its connected to the modem and it even says that there is a connection so i dont think its a problem where i need to contact Comcast. I can use the internet in safe mode but i cant download anything this way and its really annoying. This guy i know suggested its a virus but i had a virus before and was still able to use the internet. its just wierd cause the computer is def connected to the internet but internet explorer wont open it. i dont have another browser. please help! i feel like its something simple and i dont know where to take it to get fixed.

Depending on how you are connected to the internet you could follow this answer:

I have three icons in my taskbar. A wireless connection, a local area connection and an internet connection. This may be the problem. Go to control panel, open up network connections and you may see an internet gateway icon. Right click on that and enable it.

First run a virus and spy check just to be sure.
