i've plugged it in via the USB cable and changed the source on the cd player to USB. it is reading it and then the cd player screen says 'No Audio' and the iPod says 'Connected, eject to disconnect'. neither will let me do anything. I can change the source on the cd player, i have tried pressing Play as though it was a cd but no reaction was present. The ipod is not allowing me to press anything either.

  1. Its not supposed to!

the USB dock connector on the iPod is for ipod compatible devices only.

thats certain ipod approved Audio systems and computers only they need to have ACTIVE USB control not just passive memory reading to work. the iPOD is not like a USB flash drive it needs the audio system or computer to read the hidden library file then open the hidden folder to play.
