My ipod touch wont show up in the source lost on itunes

My ipod is plugged into the computer and it says its charging. but for some reason it wont show up in the source list. i really want to add some new music. has anyone had this [problem and how do you fix it

Just call us. 1-800-275-2273. Not recognized is the longest call we get since there are so many things that we can do.
