hm, that's kinda weird.  did you get a new ipod, or was there another ipod used previously with that itunes?  if so, you may have to register another the one that you are using now.  you also might want to try changing the settings, becaquse you can choose whether you want it to sync as soon as it's plugged in, or if you want it to sync when you press the sync button.  sometimes if the ipod is new aswell, your computer should recognize it by saying that its found a new software or something like that.  but yeah, i think you just have to register it and you'll be fine.  if that doesnt work try taking it to the place you bought it and ask whats wrong with it.  if they dont know call the apple helpline or go to any apple store, they might tell you how to fix this problem and if its something thats wrong with the ipod they might have to fix it for you but you might have to pay if you dont have warranty.  i hope this helps. :)
