Question:

My job is painfully boring. What should I do?

I sit in my office all day. This year will be exactly like last year. I can't hardly stand the thought of it! I make OK money, but I'm not challenging myself. Am I expecting too much from my job or should I try to find something better-- maybe even go back to school to get a masters? I'm thinking about Special Education, but I'm kind of an introvert. Can a quiet person be a good teacher?

  2. Whether you should try going back to school really depends on a lot of things.  These include whether you can afford it, whether you have the time for it, and whether you feel like you have enough drive.  Because of this, I can't answer that question for you.

In terms of whether you should teach Special Education, I'd warn you that it is one of this fields that you really want to try out to make sure it's a good fit.  Good ways to try include trying part-time tutoring with special education students, or signing up to be a substitute teacher.

I know firsthand that quiet people/introverts can teach because I teach at two local colleges and am an introvert. The great thing about introverts is that, with practice, we can "fake it" and appear talkative and comfortable in front of crowds.  It's basically like being an actor.  I've been told I appear bubbly/enthusiastic to students, which always cracks me up.

  3. I am a special education teacher, and one thing I always say about my job is that it is often exhausting, sometimes exasperating, but never, ever boring!

The big question is, why do you want to teach students with special needs?  Have you worked in some sort of related field and found it to be exciting and rewarding?  If this is the right fit for you, it can be an incredible job.  Just be sure that you love teaching people who are somewhat out of the mainstream.

As far as a quiet person being a good teacher, yes, I absolutely think that a natural introvert can become a good teacher.  Far too many people think that teaching is about constantly talking, giving instructions, giving corrections, giving feedback, etc.  It is true that all of these things are involved, but good teachers are also good observers, giving kids time to process information, to try things out, to see on their own whether something works or not.  There's truly an art to watching a student and knowing when to step in and give some support, and when to just stand back and let the child try to work it out on his own.  People who talk too much deprive students of the opportunity to take a challenge, and to become more independent.

Just be sure that you want to work with special education students.  You deserve a job that gives you satisfaction, and the students deserve a teacher who has the dedication and devotion, and will stick with it even during the times when the exhaustion and exasperation seem much larger than the satisfaction.  Talk to some special ed teachers and spend some time in special ed classes before you make your decision.  But if it's the right job for you, it could truly be the best job you will ever have.  Every year, I say, "This is the best class ever!" and I am telling the truth.

  4. You MUST have  a great way to express yourself..To be a teacher you need that special personality, be versatile, lots of energy along with patience.   I know. am a teacher. You can maybe  a volunteer to see how you like it first...The make your choice to stay or not stay.

  5. find a better job that you like and you will find that job and make better money think about you being happy not them you can always find a better teacher job
