Pieter, you would be best off to go with a "starter set" and get a little better quality, than to plunk down a lot of $s for a set of 13 clubs.  Especially just starting out. Recommend, Driver, fairway wood, 5 or 6 iron, 8 iron, Pitching wedge, sand wedge and putter.  US Kids Golf makes clubs that are color coded to your kids height and you can expand the set as they grow.  Another option is used clubs to get more for your $. ebay and yard sales are good places to look.   But just getting started you should not spend more than $125.  Invest in lessons.

i bought a set of clubs and a bag for just over100$ when i was 12 and they were great clubs.

As everybody has mentioned prices already, I will just say this:

Don't buy anything expensive because there will be nothing worse than your kid not taking the sport up for very long.

Buy cheap clubs for him/her to learn with and then when/if he picks it up and the game grows on him/her then consider buying new golf clubs after about 1-2years depending how often / good he/she is at golf

How old is your child?  That is the first question to be asked.  

For anyone just starting to learn how to play golf or hit a golfball, a full complement of clubs is not necessary.  Basically all that is needed is a 3 or 5 Wood, a 6-iron, 9-iron, a wedge (pitching or sand) and a putter.  Using a full set of clubs can be overwhelming.  Learning to hit the mid-to- short woods/irons would be more practical.  Find a used set of golf clubs at a garage sale, etc, and have someone who knows how to cut the shafts to fit your childs' height.  This will be extremely beneficial.

Most importantly, be prepared for negative results and failure at first.  Golf is a difficult game.  Yet with practice and perserverence, progress will be seen and that will translate into enthusiasm and a desire to improve.  If this turns out to be the case, then go into the expense of filling the bag with the full complements of clubs.

Also understand that golf can be very frustrating.  There is no "grey area", so make it fun!

Kid how old is the kid?

If under 10 you can pick up sets for less than £30 or $60.

So don't spend a lot.
