Question:

My kids are breaking my heart with their Halloween costume ideas....?

For the first time ever, my kids are telling me that they want STORE BOUGHT costumes this year! And to top it off, my 11 yr old son wants to be Scream - you know, black cloak and that mask that everyone wears. Every year I have slaved over making incredible, creative, one of a kind costumes. I love doing this. Now they just want to wear some boring c**p that every other kid is wearing. This is not my idea of Halloween. They are ages 8 (girl), 10 and 11 (boys). When and why did my kids decide to be so conformist and does anyone have any ideas that I could suggest as costumes which would be cool. In previous years they have been: witch, Gandalf, pirates, evil altar boy, zombies, fairy, barbarians, princess. I am a really good costume maker and they always win first place at school. I love Halloween!

By the way, I know that Halloween is for them, not me, but this desire to look just like everyone else is really getting me down.

  1. Maybe your kids feel that your costumes aren't as "cool" as the other costumes they see. No offense. Either that or they just hate to see you work so hard on a costume they are really only going to wear once.

  2. Pick your battles. Let them buy a costume and express themselves in their own way this year. They likely will feel sad when they are one of four of the same costume this year - but they have to find out for themselves. Have the hugs on standby when they come home upset because they did not win the costume contest this year!

Use your extra time and energy this year to make an awsome costume for yourself... and maybe set up a cool haunted house in the front yard for the neighborhood kids! This way... you will still be the BEST Halloween Mom!!

  3. If you really enjoy making the costumes, why not ask at the school office for the names of some disadvantaged kids. Give their moms a call and see if they'd like you to make some costumes for them. Not everyone can afford those store costumes and not everyone has the creative talent or time to make them. I'm sure those kids would love to win the prize.

If I send you my sizes would you be my mom and make me something special?

  4. Try a Glow Stick Costume -- www.glowmancostumes.com

They are new and so cool.  They can be seen from blocks away and make you look like an animated cartoon.  You can dress up with them and have a blast.

  5. It's all part of growing up and becoming independant people. Be glad your children are mature and confident enough to make their own decisions and live with them. Who cares if they win anything or not? I have made my DS's costumes almost every year, but he decides what to be and I make it. Like you-I enjoy it and he wins a lot of contests, but I am sure it won't be long until he wants the cheapy store bought ones also.

This year, he decided to be a Viking! LOL!

  6. Do they go to public school...?
