  1. Shampoo/conditioner with tea tree oil in it is very effective.  Be careful though, it can have estrogen-like side effects on pre-pubescent boys.  Another remedy that worked for my nieces was hair spray in the hair every day.  I agree with the above participant regarding coats/hats in a pile.  Try and have your child keep theirs separate, if possible.  Shouldn't they be hanging them up anyway at school?

  2. I have no idea if this works or is true, but my mom used to put Listerine on our hair once a week when we were in elementary school. We never got lice, so maybe it did work??

Here's a link to a website about it:

    http://www.peoplespharmacy.com/archives/...

  3. buy shower caps, after lice treatment put in mayonnaise or hair conditioner thickly cover hair to smother lice, cover with cap till next lice treatment...can sleep with cap and goop on. wash everything poss with hot water and spray down. to keep lice away after they gone...lice dont like dirty/oily hair. use mouse, hairsprays, gels, oils and such to style hair and protect. good luck!

  4. beautician told me that on my daughter use coconut shampoo and conditioner.... but you have to make sure it has coconut oil in it...... are your kids getting it from school? If so you need to contact the nurse so that she can check all the kids in the class since it does get transferred quickly..... that could be why they are getting it again an again.....

  5. all you have to do is to use mouse, hairspray, or hair Gel in their hair every day the lice can not attach to the hair they can not.  If the child has it,  make sure you get every single egg out of their hair.  or re infestation can occur.

  6. Remedies for Head Lice

For head lice problem wash your hair with vinegar. It will kill all the nits in two days. Apply coconut oil to your head after shampoo and condition. Add ten to fifteen drops of tea tree oil into shampoo bottle and use it daily. Rub listerine mouth wash on your head. This will kill all the lice. Massage your head with mayonnaise and comb it after 2 hours. This will kill all the lice and their eggs. Apply a mixture of lemon and butter on your head, wait for 15 seconds and then rinse your head.

  7. Here is what I just posted in response to a similar question.

Be careful. Here are some facts and a sound and effective treatment.

    1) "Lice shampoos" are pesticides and can harm a child or make them very ill

    2) Lice has to be treated multiple times

    3) A successful cycle is treatment over a 10 day period. Have to get all the stages of the critters.

    4) Anything at the store with the word "Lice" in it is an expensive item, and most don't work, with a noticeable exception- A lice comb is perfect (not the electronic ones, they are a waste of money).

We have had our share of "gifts" from school, so don't feel bad. Keep in mind that it only takes one child who isn't successfully treated to start it all over again.

My daughter was very premature and we are very careful about meds or chemicals. I researched this subject extensively and then found the best combination.

Olive oil, plastic hairnet, towel, lice comb, bowl, paper towels.

This is a natural and beneficial substance and is relatively inexpensive. The trick here is to suffocate the lice and the eggs.

    1) Put the towel around your shoulders to keep the oil from running down your neck.

    2) Pour on olive oil and work it in like shampoo. A little at a time is best so it isn't as messy. You must get a thorough and thick treatment. Keep it out of your eyes and ears. Cotton in the ears helps.

    3) Put the plastic hairnet on and leave the oil in at least 40 mins. An hour is better. FACT: When threatened with suffocation, lice will secrete a substance that will encase them in a tiny "shell" in which they can survive for 20 mins or more.

    4) Remove the hairnet and use the lice comb on EVERY part of the hair. I use a bowl about 1/4 full of olive oil. It makes it easier to remove the lice from the comb (shake the comb in the oil), and guarantees a good kill of anything else still moving.Between each stroke, clean the lice out of the comb. Sometimes I use my fingers or a paper towel to remove them from the comb into the bowl. This can be messy but not overly so- just keep the paper towels handy.

    5) After all the hair is throughly combed twice, go to the shower and shampoo the olive oil out.

    6) Treat ever other day for a few days to be sure. (At a minimum every 3 days for a week. More often is better for 10 days).

    Important notes:

    - You *must* treat every member of the family, preferrably at the same time.

    - You must *avoid* reinfection by others. Retreat with the above method at the first sign of more lice.

    - Olive oil is good for your hair. You'll probably notice it is very soft afterwards. It doesn't have a bleaching effect, but curls may go away for a day or so. Not to worry, they'll come back after a few washes.

    - Olive oil is NOT TOXIC. You can wash your hair in it repeatedly with no ill effects. Your hair may look a little flat for a couple days while treating the lice, but that's much better than using strong pesticides.

    - Do NOT try to use a lice shampoo or treatment like this. Read the warning label- more than one or two treatments can be harmful or worse.

    - Almost anything that will suffocate the lice will work (ie mayo, etc), but they are messy and sometimes have undesirable effects on the hair and stain clothes, etc.

We are not opposed to medicines or chemicals. We use them all the time, so I am not one of those, "Here sniff this berry and turn your face to the sun to cure arthritis," kind of folks. :)

But why anyone would recommend using strong pesticides on their child is shocking. Guess there is too much money to be made by the retailers...

I provided the above info to our preschool a few years back when it kept going around. The teacher passed it along to the other parents, and the problem disappeared quickly!

If you use a search engine, you'll find much of the above info. It's been quite some time since my research and I do not remember the references.

Try the suggestion, then print it out and share it with the other parents. They will thank you! And you need them to be successful, too, if you want to keep your family bug-free.

Hope this helps. Now I have to scratch my head after thinking about this subject... :)

  8. because of a lice outbreak at my daughters school 3 years ago...i tried everything, even home remedies. nothing helped even the chemical stuff you buy. i broke down and bought a device called robicomb..it is a comb battery operated that zaps the lice and even removes the eggs and dead ones. she hasnt had it since and i recommend it to anyone. it runs about $30 but it is well worth it. its comfortable for the child because there is no chemicals used and its easy to use just like combing their hair. you can get it at walgreens or walmart.

  9. Best thing to do is grease their hair with Vaseline. Lice doesn't like grease. I have never heard of a black child with lice because we use hair oil due to the roughness of our hair.

  10. well, find out where they got them, usually it's school, if so, tell the principal and they might take action, if you know there are lice going around put your kids' hair in braids and make sure they don't share hairbrushes or hats,or hair ties and make sure they don't lay down or anything at school because lice could be on furniture as well as on other children's heads. hope this helps!

  11. Well...short of home schooling them and keeping them away from other children...there's not a whole lot you can do if the class is infested.

If you have girls, pig tails in tight braids will help, boys, buzz cut...but even that's no guarantee.

  12. First thing, you have to figure out where they are getting it from. If it seems to come from school/daycare, you need to report it to the school everytime. A lot of people treat their kids, but don't treat themselves or others that the kids come in contact with. Are you sure you are cleaning & washing everything and everyone in the home with lice shampoo and hot water?  My mom rinsed our hair with cider vinegar after shampooing twice a week. I never had lice even when others in my class and my best friend got it and spent the night at my house, we even slept in the same bed.

I have always heard that lice don't like oily hair because the eggs (nits) don't stick well to the oily hair.

  13. OK you may not like this but it works!

    Use frontline flea spray!

I swear to you I used it on my own son, I figured if it was safe to use on two day old kittens then it was safe to use on my son when he was 5.

I was sick of paying out money for lice treatment that didn't work so in desperation I tried the frontline and it worked!

I'm not saying you should do it, just that I did and it worked for me.

  14. when they are in school tell them NOT to put their coat/jackets on top of others

  15. Once you clean the kids, the bedding, the toys , the car and any other place you can think of.... have your child dab some rosemary oil behind their ears each morning. The lice don't like the smell.

Be careful of those rid lice shampoos with pesticides in them.... they are harmful and can be linked to childhood cancers.

  16. if your kids are taking multiple showers a day...have them only wash their hair once......if that doesnt work...try having them wash their hair once every other day....

lice are attracted to excessivly clean scalps...

  17. You have to delouse your house as well as your kids. Wash all bedding and such in hot water. You can buy a spray for furniture and carpets too.
