Question:

My kitchen cupboard door fell off - how can I reattach it?

The doors on the cupboards in my kitchen are all coming off. I've tried s******g them back on, but the holes that they s***w into in the sides of the cupboards are all enlarged and the screws won't hold.

The hinges of the door can't be moved to a new position easily because they are fitted into holes on the back of the door. I can't see a way of moving them to a new position without damaging the doors.

Is there a way to fill the holes in the side of the cupboard so that the screws will hold again? I really can't afford to replace the kitchen units, so any tips that would make my kitchen cupboards last a few more years would be much appreciated!

  1. take a tube of super glue & several tooth picks, put a drop of super glue in the enlarged s***w hole, then take a tooth pick and put it as far in the hole as you can, then break it off,do this to all the holes give them a few minutes to set, then reattach the doors that should take care of your enlarged holes

  2. The quickest and simplest fix is this. Put some wood glue, or even better, epoxy, in the hole, stick a small piece of wood, toothpick or match stick or larger if it's a larger hole, in the hole, tap it gently to make sure it is all the way in and as tight as it can be, and break it off smooth with the surface. Depending on the adhesive, wait long enough for it to dry and reattach the doors. You will have new wood in the holes to hold the screws.

  3. You'll have to either fill the holes or use a larger diameter s***w.  I'd fill the holes, myself.  Possibilities include stuff like waterputty; plastic wood; matchsticks, glue and sawdust; bondo, etc.

  4. not a problem first  if not already take all the doors down  mark them so you know where they go  get some wood filler and putty up the s***w holes  then with a smaller than the s***w drill bit drill new holes for easier insertion for the screws reattach all doors being careful not to restrip the wood   best method     2cd best  is take wooden matches  insert into holes break off even reattach doors   some might suggest a sightly larger s***w this might work but the new s***w heads will stick out above the hardware

  5. As Bruce said in his first method:

Filling with wood putty, letting it dry a couple of days and then drilling a small pilot hole for the s***w when reinstalling it worked as a permanent fix for me. And that works with house doors too should you have one where the s***w has stripped.

I think that putty dries stronger than the original wood. Using epoxy or glue you might not be able to remove that s***w again without tearing up the cabinet.
