what should I do? She just got it today, and I didn't notice till the vet was closed for the night. Is it an emergency? is there anything i can give her to make her feel better? She is almost 5 months old. She is an inside cat and is around dogs occasionally, but never other cats.

  1. Please withhold kitty’s food tonight to give kitty’s digestive system a rest. Since diarrhea dehydrates try getting some pediatric electrolytes in the baby food section of your store. While there pick up a few jars of meat baby food. The baby food will re introduce kitty to food that is not too harsh for kitty’s delicate digestive system while the Pedialyte (brand name) will help to balance kitty's electrolytes as they may be out of balance right now.

it make take full 24 hours to return to normal.

When you start  kitty  back on the dry food you may want to coat that with  the unflavored Metamucil powder.  That should firm up the stool.

If you don't see improvement by Monday make an appointment with your vet.

  2. Diarehea can be serious in kittens. I just went through this with some foster kittens. It can be caused by a # of things. Mine had hook worms which are deadly to kittens and coccidia (not sure if I spelled it right), it could be another intestinal parasite or something she ate. Take her to a vet if it persists more than 2-3 days as she may become dehydrated.

  3. she might have female coccidiosis. its a parasite. i dont think that she will die, but just check on her throughout the night to make sure she is ok then take her to the vet tomorrow. if it is closed tomorrow then just keep a close eye on her until monday. if she starts vomiting then call the vet!

  4. do not feed any type of human medicine. just with hold food for 24 hours but give plenty of water. this is the advice you will get when you call a vet for help anyway. if it doesn't clear up then go to a vet. it is not an emergency but should be seen if the stools dont firm up within this period. the poor thing will be hungry but it will give her stomach a chance to rest.

  5. Mix pepto bismol in her water

  6. Don't give Pepto!  It has a form of aspirin in it and can be toxic to cats (that's why you cant give to young children)!  I don't think it is an emergency just keep an eye on her.  Watch for any vomiting or lethargy.  It could be so many different things, intestinal parasites being one of them.  Its not going to kill her in a day so you can be safe to wait until your vet is open unless the situation gets worse.

  7. coccydia (sp?)  My kitten had it, intestinal worm. Yes get help now.   Treatable but makes them uncomfortable, not to mention you will be cleaning up alot of p**p!!!!

  8. Change her diet.

When my cat gets diarrhea, I feed her real tuna. Not cat tuna.

Don't give her anything like rice, or too much kangaroo meat, that makes cats get diarrhea.

They are better off eating food that is more real, not cat mush like some cat foods are.

If you can get cat food with chunks of fish in it, then that will keep her well.  Kangaroo meat occasionally is good too, but not too much.
