I switched his catfoods earlier and he threw up all of it. Should I switch cat foods now or take him tot he vet to see what's wrong?

Earlier he also had dry cat food from outside that belongs to my sister in law's cat.

Thanks for the help.

  1. Some cats don't respond well to an abrupt switch in cat food brands. Try giving him his old cat food, exclusively, and see if it helps. If it does, gradually mix the new food in with old and it should help ease the transition. If it doesn't help and your kitten continues to vomit, you might want to call your vet.

  2. Welcome to the world of cat ownership.  You will find that cats throwing up is very common.  It is one way to deal with the fur and other junk they get natural into their stomach's by grooming (hairballs).

It also happens if their diet is switched suddenly. When switching foods, it is recommended that you do a mixture of the old and new for a couple days.  It also happens if they eat something such as grass or other plants.  (Eating a little is good for them. Overeating is not.)

Normally you do not take a cat to a vet for throwing up unless there are other signs of illness, or the vomiting continues non-stop for several hours.  I have four cats, and clean up about a mess a day from their throwing up.

  3. You have to gradually switch foods. Cats aren't like humans, because they're used to eating one type of food, not a variety like us. When their only food is suddenly switched, their stomachs can't handle it. I don't think you need to go to a vet. If he continues to throw up for more than a week, call a vet. Also, sometimes their hairballs just look like puke. My cat does that, its really gross.
