Question:

My kitten likes to pee on the floor...?

She's urinated on my mother's workbag, the newspaper, and the floor ten minutes ago. She's about 3.5 months old, not fixed, healthy. I have three other, older cats, two are fixed, one is not, all animals are female.

My kitten knows how to use the litter box. She just doesn't sometimes.

When I first brought her home, we kept a litter box upstairs (one-level house with basement). She was too small to go up and down the stairs, but recently she has been able to scamper everywhere, and loves to play and explore with the other cats. My father figured it was time to put the kitty pooper back in the basement since she can now go down there. Problem is, she doesn't go downstairs to urinate, and I'm fed up with my kitten's deplorable behavior.

I take her down to the place where the litter box is kept several times a day, and sometimes she does her business, but whenever she has to urinate, she goes upstairs on whatever is on the floor.

I smacked her on the rump several times, and said NO in a loud, firm voice, but I don't think she's getting it, please help?

Thank you so much for your time in reading and answering this question.

  1. multiple cats = many litter boxes. get about 4 litter boxes. cats often hate to use shared litter boxes on extream occasions. also the boxes must be kept to perfection, cats hate and will not use a litter box that even smells bad or sometimes had fecal and urine matter already inside. get a multiple cat litter and make sure your vet approves the brand you get so you know it's safe for the cat. sadly cats do not understand being spanked. try a squirt bottle of cold water they will dislike this and it will not harm them. oh no. her litter box location was moved and she doesn't like it. that is not where it should be in her mind and she is protesting. i hope something works out. you may have to move the litter box back to where it was if you want her to use it.

  2. With the multiple cats I am wondering if you have multiple litter boxes? This can be important as some kitties do NOT like to share with others, especially when it comes to urinating. I had four cats at one point and had five litter boxes throughout the house. Try this before anything else...perhaps ask your vet for some other options as well.

  3. Put her litter box back and get another little one and place it close by.  slowly migrate the newer one to the basement.  Un fixed cats have stronger urine smells and this is a marking thing for them.  She is a baby and learned to be a good kitty and you the human have interfered in that...now you have to help her relearn what she already knows.  Hurting her by spanking her is not helping as she cannot put the two together.  I am afraid this one is your bad.  Remember also any urine spots should be cleaned with a urine stain remover to stop her from returning to the spot.  commercial cleaners are for our benefit and we like the smell but the cat can still smell the urine though the scent.  Good thing is she is young.  I had four cats and just as many litter boxes I finally broke down and bought a cement mixing tray as my Maine Coon could not fit the jumbo cat pans he looked all scrunched.  The cement mixing pan was large enough they all had their own corner. Best of luck.

  4. leave the box upstairs that she was using, it's not good to move litter boxes around and take them away etc.
