My kitten is about 11-12 weeks old and it refuses to use it's litter box.

When we first got it about a week ago it was using it's litter box fine but it just suddenly stopped and now it's pooping on the couch.

  1. are u cleaning it out regularly? My cats wouldnt touch it if there was any sign of a p**p or wee, they would snub it. Cats are very pompous!

  2. take the p**p from the couch and put it in the litter box. and then show him or her the litter box.

  3. try to put her hand in the litter box and dont put it in a crouded place or noisy or beside its food and clean the litter box atl east 2 times a day and once a week clean the litter box all good luck

  4. Put the kitten in a small room for a few days so he can get the hang of going to the litter box.  Big rooms often overwhelm kittens and they start going wherever it's convenient. Put food, water, toys, litter box, everything he needs in the "nursery" and keep him there a few days. I just rescued a little guy from the woods who had never seen a litter box and hasn't missed a beat with the litter box with this this method.

  5. Have you changed litter brands?  Different brands of litter have different textures and kitties have sensitive paws.  Some cats are finicky and won't step in it if they don't like the way it feels.

  6. You need to put the kitten in an area where it has no choice but to use the litterbox.  I did this with my kitten and it worked like a charm.  I put a small sleeping area for her then put the litter box a little distance away.  Obviously she didn't want to pee or poo anywhere in her sleeping area so she started using the litterbox all the time.  I had her doing that for about a week.  I also praised her whenever she used the litterbox.  It's just instinct for them to use it.  But it has to be somewhere they can see it or find it easily.......

  7. Every time that she/he goes to the bathroom somewhere other than the litter box, pick her up and tell her no in a stern way. Put her in the litter box. Keep doing it, so that she knows the place to go when she has to go to the bathroom.

  8. How to litter train your kitten

Firstly, do not allow your new kitten full run of the house. Try to contain him to the room you spend the most time in so you can watch him most of the time. Close all bedroom doors and barricade other areas that do not have doors.

Cats are fastidious animals and by instinct they prefer to bury their urine and faeces. Watch your kitten carefully and if you see signs that he is about to go pee or p**p, gently pick him up without a fuss and without scaring him place him in the litter box. Take one of his paws and scratch the litter with it. Because he can dig in the litter his natural instincts should take over. If the kitten uses the litter box give him lots of praise. If he doesn't use it don't force the issue. You must never use a raised voice or make him afraid of the litter tray in any way.

Once your kitten has used the litter he leaves the smell of cat urine which will encourage him to come back next time. If he continues to have accidents try transferring some urine or faeces to the litter box so that the  smell of it encourages him to use the litter.

What are the signs kitty needs to toilet?

One of the signs that a kitten needs to eliminate is that he will begin scratching at the floor. He will often go to a corner, behind a couch or a quiet area. Be observant and watch your kitten's behaviour. Often a hurried departure from a game will indicate that he is hurrying off for a toilet break.

  9. Not all Cats are born knowing how to use the litter box, place your kitten's food bowl next to the litter pan, where you want your kitten to ultimately use the litter box. The kitten will quickly learn where her food is, and will connect that place as hers and will begin associating the litter box as part of her space. Soon she'll connect the litter smell and feel that she is using in her chosen spot to do her business, is the same as the litter box next to her food's - and she'll associate that as another place to do her business. As soon as you catch her doing her business there - you can remove the spot training litter pan.  It may take time, but don't worry, she'll catch on!
