Question:

My kittens keep clawing the fringe on our large area rug. Tried squirt gun (doesn't work). Any suggestions?

It's a rather valuable rug, so we're reluctant to spray any substance on the rug that could damage the fibers, nor can we use double-sided sticky tape, since that may pull off more fringe when removed than the kittens are removing with their claws. For previous kitties, a squirt from a squirt gun a couple of times when we catch them in the act has always worked. . .unfortunately, these kitties seem to think that's part of the game !!!

  1. you may want to try tucking the fringe under the reverse side of the rug like this:

    http://www.rugrag.com/post/How-do-I-Trim...

it uses clear packing tape which is easily removable with afta or another type of dry cleaning solvent.

good luck!  the only other alternative is just to roll up the rug or not let the cats in that area.

  2. I have always had the same exact problem!!  I have finally give up :(  Sorry.  If you find something that really works for you,  please let me know....

And yes, I have tried much of the really great ideas you have received here already.    Hence,  no more fringed rugs.

  3. hey well i will give u to suggestion as i have a kitten at the moment

    1. BUY THEM A SCRATCHING POST

    2. SPRINKLE A LITTLE BIT OF PEPPER ON THE RUG AND THEY WILL SNIFF IT THEY WILL SNEZZE A LITTLE BUT THEY WILL NEVER GO BACK THERE AGAIN.

  4. Well, it seems like you have 2 options: roll up and store the rug or keep the kitties out of that room.

  5. Pennies in a soup can.  It's like fingernails scratching a chalkboard to a cat.

  6. When you catch them doing this again stamp your foot and clap your hands loudly saying a loud firm "NO". Hopefully this will startle them enough to make them stop. Goodluck.

  7. Get soft claws nail caps for them at petsmart or http://www.softclaws.com/.

  8. i have 3 cats and nothing works.

if the rug is valuable i would put it away, i don't care what people say cats don't listen...

  9. Cat will be cats. Have you not learned that with your "previous cats"?

Are you the kind of control freak animal owner? you want a robot? why don't you get rid of the cat? My recommendation to you: give away your animals to someone who REALLY loves animals as they are or to put the cat for adoption through an animal rescue society. But a toy cat, one of those that  breath with batteries. They don't break anything, they don't pee, and you don't even have to feed them. and you will know they will NEVER PLAY WITH YOUR VALUABLE  RUG

  10. Soft claws nail caps are great .

do you cut their claws (trim them ) regularly?

try putting a scratching post in the same spot let them get use to it.

whenever you see them clawing  the rug , carry them and put them at the scratching post .

always use a hard and loud NOOOOOO when you see them clawing the rug. not to really scare them off with it ! :)

u may try lemon peel - or covering the part with Foil paper.

    good luck
