Question:

My kittens mew like crazy...help!?

i have two kittens, and every time i feed them or give them water (right on schedule) they go crazy and climb up my legs and mew.

I understand that.

But now every time I go to the kitchen, they do the same thing. my husband gets mad at me and says I must be starving them if they go that crazy around me when I go to the kitchen. I am never late feeding them, and I don't give them human food.

How can I get my husband to understand that they are not being abused, or get them to behave?

  1. "Schedule"?  How often are you feeding them?  Young kittens should be fed 5 or 6 times per day.  If they're that frantic odds are you're not feeding them enough.  Or what you are feeding them is so poor nutritionally that they're not getting satisfied on it.  Please be sure to feed these kittens a quality MEAT based diet made specifically for kittens - not a cheap kitten food from the grocery store or WalMart.

  2. My kitten did this when I first got her. The food she was eating before I adopted her must not have been that tasty casue she ate like a pig for weeks. You just need to let them know its not ok for them to climb up your leg during feeding time.

They've been conditioned to think its feeding time when you go into the kitchen so the lightblub goes on in their head when they see you in there and they think "yay, food time!" so they do the same thing they would do when you go in there to feed them, climb up your leg.

Right now the behavior may be cute because they are small but imagine an 8lb cat trying to claw its way up your leg. You have to stop the behavior now. Put them down on the floor and tell them firmly NO, every time they do it and eventually they will get the picture.

Also, if you aren't already it would be a good idea to leave out dry food for them to graze on throughout the day.

  3. We feed our cats dry food and when this happens (which is ALWAYS) we put about one more piece of dry food in the bowl and make it appear full by spreading the food around.  They seem to be fooled and think they are getting what they want!  As for your husband tell him he is in charge for the day.  He must feed them...and if they really are simply associating the kitchen with food he will see this first hand.  Good Luck!

  4. They probably just want extra food, but it wouldn't hurt to put maybe a little extra in the food bowl, then slowly wean them off it. Also, they are just talking to you sometimes, so be patient! My cat meows for us to watch him eat, so ya

  5. Hi, please review the food you are giving them, maybe they are not getting enough protein.. kittens need more calories then adults.. GOOD LUCK

  6. The kittens have become accustomed to you feeding them in the kitchen. When they see you in the kitchen, they automatically think of food.

The only thing you can do is continue to feed them on schedule, that will accustom them to the set feeding time.
