My knee hurts and feels really tight when I bend it.

Question

Most of the pain is right above my knee cap. I've had this come and go before, but it's been a really long time since I've had it. I've never had it checked because it always goes away. It is only in one leg and my knee is warm and maybe a little swollen, not much. Any ideas what this might be?
