I have 3 smal l(young) koi fish in my pond... however, they don't like to swim around...they spend most of the time just chillin' by the filter, at first i thought it was just normal, but the other day i went to a landscaping place, where they had some ponds set up with koi fish and those swam around a lot, so i thought that maybe it was because they were bigger fish, but later i saw another pond with fish the same size as mine and they were swimming around everywhere. what might be the problem with my fish?

  1. Yes, 50 gallons is kind of small for koi even if they are small. Another reason could be that they are staying by the filter, which houses a waterfall? If so, maybe a temperature problem and staying from shade.

  2. How long have you had them? It takes fish a while to get used to a new enviornment.

  3. 50 gallons is not a pond.  They're fine for now, but that is WAY to small.  You need something on the order of 1500 gallons.

Anyhow, I suspect they are getting acclimated.  The small size also affords them little comfort to hide, so they are most likely scared.

  4. koi chillin in your filter hmm probably you did not do any water changes, water quality is very bad thats why they are staying in one spot.  Or the pond is too shallow which makes water hot.  Improve water quality then add rocksalt for conditioning your 3 kois in a week they will swim around.
