Is this recently and out of the blue following a windows update?  If so I've had the same problem occur on me PC Sony DVD drive again.  If so it is not your DVD but Windows update thats at fault. find the one that caused the problem but restoring your windows to an earlier version and then add the updates one by one till your dd stops working then unistall that one and that will cure it.  obviously if it's not the windows update then it could be the DVD.
