i'm at the government center where there is good puclic wifi on all floors. my laptop recognizes and connects to the network, but wont access the internet. when i check, it shows lots of packets sent (in the hundreds or thousands) vs very few recieved (less than a hundred). there is no password needed to connect and i've seen other people do it with no problem. help!

  1. WHile they may have WPA2, WPA and WEP (worthless) turned off, they MAY have MAC address filtering turned on!

That kinda sounds like what is going on as you are sending packets to the Access Point, but the AP is not allowed to send anything back to you!

    Go to the CMD prompt.

    Type in IPCONFIG

Do you have an IP address other than 169.X.X.X?

    Type in IPCONFIG /ALL

What is the default gateway?  Can you PING the default gateway?

Edit - Thats quite a guarantee Nasrudin.  That would ONLY work if he has an IP address associated with his NIC from a previous location.  Most OS's do a good job flushing this out by themselves upon establishment of a new connection!

  2. Firts disable your network card not the wireless card then

try to go to the start , run and type cmd and hit enter.

Then type ipconfig /all and enter

then type ipconfig /flushdns and enter

    type again ipconfig /release

    type again ipconfig /renew

and then you will be connected
