My laptop keeps turning off suddenly?

i was doing research on my computer, whilst on messenger and had my earphones in listening to something on windows media.

my laptop suddenly shut down, and when i rebooted it, it did the same thing without even getting onto the log in screen.

when i tried it a third time, it worked (hence how i'm writing this)

the laptop was on charge while i was doing this, and was a bit hot underneath.

is something wrong? will i have to get it checked out?

  1. Laptops will run hot but it's not to shut down automatically like you are describing. Assuming that you did not change any of the configurations on your system - then if your problem persists you should have it checked out. On top of your CPU is a heat dissipater. If this seems not to be working it could severely damage your entire system. But before panicking check this out... I'm assuming you have WinXP? Place your mouse pointer on an open area of your desktop and right click - Choose Properties - at the "Display Properties" screen click on the "Screen Saver" tab - Click on the "Power" button - "Power Schemes" tab - make sure that are set to "Never" - Click on "Hibernate" tab - Make sure that "Enable Hibernation" is unchecked - If you made any changes then click Apply and OK buttons.  Lastly, if you system continues to shut down as described then I would call the manufacturer for a service estimate or take it to Geeks (Best Buys) or the like to get it checked out... Sorry for you problem - Hope this helps, Good Luck.

  2. The exact same thing happened to me, I called the support line and they made me reinstall windows because they said it had become unstable, it was a real pain to have to do that as I lost some files. However the laptop being over heated could do it too, try raising it up off of the surface you are working on, i.e. have a book or something under the back to leave some bit of gap to let air circulate... :)

  3. Its because the fan is not removing the heat from the processor therefore it shuts down to protect it from melting the electronics inside. My Laptop dose this if I do not use my cooling mat.

It cost £10 but it did the trick.

  4. Try unplugging the charger & letting the laptop cool down a bit. Maybe you've left the charger in too long & it didn't like it. This site - http://www.uofr.net/~greg/hardware/lapto... - explains why your laptop might be behaving this way - scroll down to "Computer turns off randomly"

  5. Your laptop has most likely overheated, download a free program called SpeedFan and make sure your laptop fans are operating properly.

If they aren't then you will need to take it to a specialist who can either fix or replace the fan.

The sudden turning off is just a security measure put in place to make sure the overheating doesn't damage any of your laptops internal components.
