My laptop says EXCEEDS power limit when i connected my external hard drive?

my laptop is dell inspiron 600m. i recently bought this 350GB external hard drive, wen i connected that to my USB port, it says EXCEEDS POWER LIMIT. can any one please help me in solving my problem besides exchanging my hard drive?

  1. you can find a plug in on the hard drive and plug it into the wall if it has that capability if not sorry


  2. Are you connected to your power adapter? It might not give you that message, and it could start drawing power from the power cord.

  3. Go get a USB 2.0 hub that has its own power connection(to the wall), then plug in your Hard drive into the hub, and the hub into your laptop.

    Your Laptops Motherboard or power supply cannot supply the nessicary power to run the drive, using the powered hub means that the power for the drive is supplied from the hub, instead of from the computer.

    somthing like this should be fine, just make sure that its EXTERNALLY POWERED, if not youll just be trying to pull even more power from your poor motherboard.

  4. USB ports have a power limit they can supply, aparrently your drive exceeds that amount of power
