ok...i'm not so good at computer stuff so plz bear wit me if i mess up the vocabularyyy (:

my laptop is part of a network with my dad's laptop and pc...but the internet connection won't work!! my dad asked me to figure out the problem b/c he's busy...but i don't see how. I put in the Netgear wireless PC card into my laptop and it says on the laptop moniter "Wireless Network Connection (name of my network)....Connection: Excellent". But when i double clikc on Internet Explorer, it doen'st work! I went into the command prompt and typed "ipconfig" and all the info came out. I noticed the problem, but i don't know how to fix it. The beginning of the IP address is supposed to be same for all computers in the same network, but my laptop's IP address is totally different than the ones in my dad's laptop and the PC. Plus, the Subnet Mask is different too, which explains y the internet doesn't work. My laptop thinks its not part of the network. For my dad's laptop and the PC, the subnet mask is 225.225.225.0. For mine, it says 225.225.0.0....u see?

HOw Do I fix this problem? Pleeease help!

  2. You can try to go into control panel, network connections and right click on the wireless connection and then click repair. That will try to repair your network connection. Also is the network connection configured for the right network, is the name on it correct? Also you can go to control panel, network connections and then right clicj the wireless connection and go to the properties, scroll down to internet protocol (TCP/IP) highlight it and click properties, check to see if it doesnt have an assigned IP if it does then just click the obtain IP address automatically, then click ok and close. Another thing you can check if your firewall is on, sometimes when its on it wont let you connect. In the connection properties click on the advanced tab click settings and turn off your firewall. Make sure you have an antivirus software so you wont get infected. Well let me know what happens

    Good luck

  3. Sounds like you need his network key.

Make sure the wireless connections are correct for the internet and you dont have the dial-up connections as being primary.

Send me a message on Yahoo Messenger if your still having troubles.

  5. just put a static ip by going into internet connection propers, open tcp/ip and set ur ip and subnet mask put ur subnet mask 255.255.255.0 nad ip same as ur dads but change the last number, probably 192.168.1.x, x= 1 to 25..

  6. Seems, your Laptop doesn't receive IP address from DHCP server,

can you please make sure following..

    1) if you have wireless Security pw, try to enter the Wireless security code again (make sure you haven't entered wrong key b4)

    to do this:

right click on wireless network connection icon, > view available wireless network> select your network > press disconnect >

then.. select your network again and leftside you can see.."change the order of prefered network" click on it

remove all network. from there.. and press ok

    2)  right click your wireless connection icon on taskbar > open network connection > right click on wireless network conenction > properties > select internet protocol TCP from the list and click on properies > make sure you havn't entered any ip manually.. choose obtain IP address automatically... and obtain DN server address automatically. Press ok

now.. restart you pc and try to connect with your wireless net..

    regards,

    J

  7. The subnet mask would be 255.255.255.0 for a class C address and 255.255.0.0 for a class B address.

Your class B is most likly the apipa address starting 169.x.x.x.   You normally get the apipa address when you can not find a DHCP server or the DHCP server is out of IP addresses.

Take your laptop to the router and plug it it directly into the router using an ethernet cable.  See you can get to the internet now.   If you can, the wireless settings need to be changed on your computer or on the router.   I would log on to the router first and under LAN settings, verify that there are enough DHCP IP addresses.  If not, increase it by two.  Can your father get to the internet wirelessly?  If so.. then you should be able as well so the configuration problem might be on your computer. Check your wireless settings.

There could be a lot of issues and you need to narrow them down to a few to find the problem.
