My Compaq laptop won't play dvd's. My family made some home videos for me to watch but they won't play. The disc it is on is a 'CD-R multispeed 32X silver' if that makes any difference. I go into the 'computer' folder and into the dvd drive folder and double click on the file i want to play and it asks me what program i want to open it with. I click windows media player and it tells me that it does not support the format...the format is .dvd apperantly. Could someone please give me step by step instructions how to play my home videos? Do i need to change the format or something? Or am I just opening it wrong? 10 POINTS BEST ANSWER******************

  1. Download & Use VLC player. It supports almost all formats

If you are particular about using Windows media player then download and install divx codec from www.divx.com.

  2. use powerdvd player or vlc player it will help u

  3. You can't burn a DVD onto a CD, they have different storage capacities. They'll have to burn the movie onto a recordable DVD instead.

  4. From your description above, it seems your family tried to burn a DVD file onto a Compact Disk that only supports certain files. Please make sure that your family has the proper equipment to burn a DVD, as well as a DVD disk. Also, you need to make sure that it is burnt on the DVD disk in the right format. Dragging the files over wont do it.
