  1. It probably means that somewhere back in your lineage there was someone related to a royal person.

  2. King isn't a typical Croatian name, not that I've ever heard.. many end in -ic.

Anyways, 'kralj' is the Croatian word for 'king.'

I suggest asking your dad. :)

  3. For immigrants arriving at the Port of New York, Ancestry.com lists the following places of origin for the surname "King":

    Ireland: 3120

    England: 2483

    Great Britain: 734

    Germany: 638

    Scotland:474

    Preussen: 73

Ancestry.com also notes that the American last name absorbed several cognates and equivalents for "King", including, but not limited to, the German Konig, the Swiss German Kung, the French Leroy, as well as an Askenzaic Jewish surname, and the Chinese equivalent of "King", Jin or Jing.

Since the nickname "King" was common for some one who conducted himself in a kingly manner, a lot of families in a lot of different countries adopted this last name.  Upon reaching the United States, the European bearers of these names, including most likely your paternal ancestors, became Mr. and Mrs. King.

  4. "Old English cyning, originally a nickname for someone who either acted in a kingly manner or who worked for or was otherwise associated with a king."

  5. It means your ancestors were "Kings Men"  which meant instead of being Free Men, you were the kings slaves or servents and not free, therefor your family was treated badly and beaten and used.
