My lawn has brown spots in a few places, it appears the grass is flat to the ground and dead brown, I do not see any mole signs liked rised areas in the lawn, but righ under the dead brown grass it does appear to be soft, as my feet sink a half inch in the whole dead area. I would say the area is 4 foot round where the dead grass is, I have also notice other yards in the area that seem to have the same thing. Not sure if it is fungus or grubs or what? thanks for any help.

  1. Grubs, cutworms, moths, and all sorts of nasty little critters get into lawns this time of year.  You need to apply an insectide to the entire lawn.  I like to use the granular stuff and mix it with my fertilizer and apply it at the same time.  I buy the cheap stuff at K-Mart.  My neighbor buys the expensive stuff from a specialized lawn and garden center.  He hates the fact my lawn looks better, it that gives you a clue.  However, in controlling the insects, I do buy Scott's Summergard in the early spring, and that seems to work really well in getting the lawn ready for summer.  And summer here means 100+ degrees for a good while.  After that, it's just minor maintenance.
