No green thumb here, and don't want the expense of starting from scratch...

  1. Done this several times.  Spray your lawn with a weed killer that won't kill the grass. I prefer Weed B Gone. I have tried several weed killers and this one works best for me. It is liquid and can be poured into a hose sprayer.

In a couple of weeks the weeds will be dead and the Weed B Gone will have dissipated. Just before the fall rains start, buy enough grass seed to cover the entire lawn. Sprinkle it on top and let the rain bring it up.

Next spring you will have a lush green lawn. Spray again with weed B gone to keep out new weeds just starting to grow, and fertilize if needed. The grass seed you plant will crowd out the wild grasses as it gets thick and lush.

  2. No need to start from scratch. You need to put some work in, though. Pull out as many of the larger weeds as you can, then get a good domestic weed-killer, NOT ROUND_UP or any weedkiller which might kill the grass. Ask someone who knows at your local garden centre, and read the label carefully. Apply to the lawn now, it is not too late, and again in 2 weeks time. For the winter apply a slow release compound fertiliser. Apply weedkiller again in the Spring, say March/April

  3. dig out the weeds with a small shovel -trowel.  be sure to get the roots.  keep up on this thru out the year.  use Scott's Weed & Seed when the temps cool and water right away.  when mowing the grass, cut high (at least 3-4 inches).  be sure your sprinkler system is fully working and winterize it when the freezing temps come.  this method is for organic  (non chemical/poison) gardening.
